Online Catechism

About the Catechism

The Catechism has been running online since spring of 2022. It began a year earlier in the Parish of St Theodore and St Teilo in Cardiff, Wales, but was expanded online in order to accommodate the number of people who wanted to take it, but were unable to join in person.

Other parishes, including those from other jurisdictions and dioceses, have since used the Catechism as a way of preparing their Catechumens for reception into the Orthodox Church, as well as offering a chance to those long-time Orthodox members who want the opportunity, to get a re-fresher in the basics of their faith. Consequently, we have served people from the Greek Orthodox Church, the Antiochian Orthodox Church, and various dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church. Indeed, we welcome people of any and all backgrounds and jurisdictions, although in the case of those who wish to formally prepare for baptism and/or chrismation, permission should always be sought first from their priest or bishop.

In many ways, the Catechism is something of an antidote to 'online Orthodoxy', insofar as it seeks to represent nothing but 'mere Orthodoxy'. In other words, it is deliberately presented in a way that sticks to fundamentals of Orthodox teaching, and works to encourage active practice among participants. Orthodoxy is presented as a living faith and a way of life that includes prayer and participation in the Liturgy and the sacraments; NOT as a series of propositions to which someone signs up, and around which they create an identity. It is a highly interactive course, where people are free to ask questions, and where they are directed to engage with their local parish.

It operates under the blessing of His Eminence, Metropolitan Jean of Dubna of the Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe (MP), located on Rue Daru in Paris, France.
